WORKING WITH DIALECT COACHES AS AN ACTOR

My work as an actor gave me the incredible opportunity to learn from  some of the best dialect coaches in the business. I will forever be grateful to them. Thank you Sam Chwat, Tim Monich, and Lilene Mansell.

A STRANGER AMONG US

In the audition process for this film, director Sidney Lumet suggested I work on the “sound” of the character. I found a dialect coach in the yellow pages named Sam Chwat. This audition with Sidney Lumet was the biggest opportunity of my career, since moving to New York City seven years earlier. I invested in a session with Sam. This was my introduction to working in such a detailed way on an accent for a character. Sam was a very kind man and a legend. After a seven-week audition process, I was cast in my debut film role, playing the character “Ariel.”

SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION

My third film role was the character “Rick” in “Six Degrees of Separation,” directed by Fred Schepisi and written by John Guare. We were fortunate enough to have legendary dialect coach Tim Monich work with us. Back then I would not have known the difference in regional accents between Utah and New York. Tim worked with amazing precision and efficiency. The subtle changes in speech clearly created a different character.

LAW&ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT

When I auditioned for the character of Didier Foucault, I had a French-speaking friend help me with the sides (scene pages). This was before we had the rich resources the internet provides today. I did the best I could at the audition, with my accent going in and out. I was offered the job, and the production paid for me to work with a dialect coach of my choice. Tim Monich, who I knew from “Six Degrees of Separation,” was unavailable, but he recommended his partner, Lilene Mansell. Lilene and I worked together for two sessions. She dissected the script and wrote out my lines phonetically for me. She was an amazing talent. Tim Monich and Lilene Mansell were the contributing authors to the very important “Speak with Distinction,” by Edith Skinner.
